HANDMADE HI (HUMAN INTELLIGENCE) INFOGRAPHICS
Understand the relationship between the operational phases, air navigation services, the technical systems behind, and the units and organizations involved.
“There is a reason for everything.” This is a humble attempt to condense the main facts, events, and developments into just one page. Omissions and simplifications are unavoidable; however, may be useful to put everything into perspective.
OPERATIONS
Let’s look at Air Navigation Services from a slightly different perspective. How do these services relate to the different phases of flight—and even before takeoff?
There is a lot happening “behind the scenes,” not just Air Traffic Control. Hopefully, this helps illustrate the broader picture.
What is the purpose of airspace classes?Ultimately, they are the way in which ANSPs define the type of service they will provide within a particular airspace volume or structure.
And remember that each State or provider may apply its own criteria. See the attached analysis of Spanish airspace as an example.
Air Traffic Control is divided into three main units: Aerodrome, Approach, and En-route. Each unit performs distinct roles and functions, directly related to the specific airspace they are responsible for managing.
ORGANIZATIONS
Any newcomer to the ATM field will inevitably feel overwhelmed by the vast number of organizations involved—public and private, national, regional and international, from service providers to political bodies, and of course the myriad of associations orbiting around them. This is an attempt to establish a kind of taxonomy, based on roles, responsibilities, and geographical scope, in order to better understand “who is who.”
There are many actors involved in aviation, and while everyone knows Air Traffic Controllers, they are only one part of the complex process behind the provision of Air Navigation Services.
Structures and responsibilities vary across States, However, one mission is always shared: ANSPs form the essential link between airports and airspace users.
Among all the organizations in the aviation field—and in ATM in particular—ICAO is the most widely recognized. But do you really know how the organization is structured? Did you know that the legendary SARPs and PANS are actually developed by task forces of international volunteers? Let’s explore how it all works…
When someone outside this environment asks, “What is the Single European Sky?” it is surprisingly difficult to explain. That is why I have prepared this infographic to clarify the main ideas from a historical perspective.
⚠️ Yes, the interpretation of the real outcome is my own, though probably shared by many others.
TECHNOLOGY
Aviation and radio systems are intrinsically linked. Almost everything in Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance has to be done wirelessly. Let’s take a look at how many spectrum assignments we have… and how many we must preserve!
